- Description: Do the Spanish have a better word for retirement? Campaigning against ageism and 180 years of the cooperative movement.

Hello, friends, it's been a while.

And quite a lot to contend with, what with Trump trampling over hard-earned rights. But, hey, we carry on, right? Right?!

I thought I'd bring you an end of January instalment of the newsletter. I do apologise for not doing these very often any more. I know you miss them, because you tell me, you lovely people.

In amongst all the end of year reflections and new year resolutions I was reading, there was one that stuck in my mind. It was about how the word *retirement* sounds like endings, being tired, retreating from the world.

I was reminded that the Spanish word for retirement is jubilación, from the same Latin root as the English word for a celebration, jubilee.

Now that 70 is the new 50 maybe we should rename retirement and call it jubilee instead?

Although, of course, for so many people, retirement isn't necessarily a time of joy. So maybe not.

On that note, here's the [Age Without Limits](https://www.agewithoutlimits.org/?ref=changeout.org) campaign to end ageism.

The Future Governance Forum have published a [useful report](https://www.futuregovernanceforum.co.uk/resource/mission-critical-03/?ref=changeout.org) on the need for partnership with civil society to deliver the government's missions.

> Civil society organisations play a critical role in the delivery of services and the design of policy; but they are much more than just a delivery partner or a set of stakeholders to be managed and engaged with by the government.

**Day of the Week 📆**

21 December 2024 marked 180 years of the Coop movement. On that day in 1844, the Rochdale Equitable Pioneers Society opened a shop.

With just five items for sale, on the first day of trading, little did they know they'd inspire a movement. [The United Nations has declared 2025 the International Year of Cooperatives](https://social.desa.un.org/issues/cooperatives/news/2025-designated-as-the-un-international-year-of-cooperatives?ref=changeout.org).

Read more about that first Coop store here [here](https://www.thenews.coop/the-night-the-lights-were-lit-180-years-of-uk-co-operation/?ref=changeout.org). It's a fabulous story.

**What am I reading? 📚**

I enjoyed Nick Cave and Sean O'Hagan's book, [Faith, Hope, and Carnage](https://www.theguardian.com/books/2022/sep/28/faith-hope-and-carnage-by-nick-cave-and-sean-ohagan-review-towards-grace?ref=changeout.org).

And Nick's [Desert Island Discs](https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m0027cgl?ref=changeout.org).

**What am I watching?** 👀

Idris Elba is on a mission to address the appalling levels of knife violence among our young people. His [documentary on BBC1](https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m0027ffx/idris-elba-our-knife-crime-crisis?ref=changeout.org) in the week is worth watching.

**What am I listening to?👂**

Two of my oldest friends and I have formed a group to do [this](https://1001albumsgenerator.com/?ref=changeout.org) together. The web site generates one of the [1001 albums you must hear before you die](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1001%5FAlbums%5FYou%5FMust%5FHear%5FBefore%5FYou%5FDie?ref=changeout.org) each day (you can choose whether or not to include weekends when you set it up). You listen to the album and give it a rating out of five stars and a review.

We started over a year ago and we've got a long way to go but and it's really fun. Basically, the three of us bonded over music in 1981 and the mission continues.

This week we've listened to [Mylo](https://open.spotify.com/album/2wdHHEDHe9dw71xVl1EgJZ?si=%5FMfx3Yb5RxyCWopzcbGA%5FA&ref=changeout.org), [New York Dolls](https://open.spotify.com/album/2xbTV0Awe4Qm5caUVuPbMr?si=6ItEMRyASgeoNE4uSc5MZQ&ref=changeout.org), [The Who](https://open.spotify.com/album/2JyNDhGhp0hiizSPuUs0i9?si=OiwjucLlTtyd%5FO4IDs7YzQ&ref=changeout.org), and [Crosby, Stills and Nash](https://open.spotify.com/album/6vUWpE8qciYHOhf7mgaGny?si=QIOK-sDxQFu6jrOQldlaig&ref=changeout.org).

(To counteract the inevitable white bloke dominance, I've also been listening to [Akiko Yano](https://open.spotify.com/track/2kkK2xdoYmvKYKGEGAqSUy?si=697f302a1c9b45f3&ref=changeout.org), [Self Esteem](https://open.spotify.com/album/5fMeoQB68BWbz9gP2Y9WDg?si=nDjjlHa6S0mUmZ4bHGe4gg&ref=changeout.org), [The Last Dinner Party](https://open.spotify.com/album/1ycq58KRtWt3wFtbuIkvLn?si=9EXkoHuRQzuzceQXxofytA&ref=changeout.org), [Little Simz](https://open.spotify.com/album/2jK2rbbnrzsId5WWSc67HP?ref=changeout.org), and [Bebel Gilberto](https://open.spotify.com/album/2S3wrPQYOlJthW3FWfVhM5?si=YfBGfC2KS3KTZbV4R9x1Ig&ref=changeout.org).)

**Joy-giving things 😍**

I can't tell you how much joy [this](https://www.instagram.com/p/DFbOgPttG2h/?utm%5Fsource=ig%5Fweb%5Fcopy%5Flink&igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==) gives me #UTV

Have a great weekend
